This week we sat down with David Sparks of the popular 5by5 show, Mac Power Users, which he co-hosts Katie Floyd. In addition to co-hosting MPU, David also writes the Macsparky Field Guides, publishes MacSparky.com, writes for Macworld, speaks on technology, and practices law. David gives us a glimpse into what’s coming up for him this summer including his reading list, ducking out of work early to grill with family, and the movies he’s most looking forward to this summer.
How’s it going?
David Sparks: I'm living the dream.
Who are you?
DS: David Sparks but a lot of people call me MacSparky. People also call me other names but my kids might read this one day so I'll keep those to myself.
Where are you from?
DS: Orange County, California but I'm nothing like those people on that show.
Tell us a little about your podcast, Mac Power Users.
DS: Katie Floyd and I dive deep on subjects to get the most out of Apple technologies. We also invite guests on to talk about their workflows and how they get work done.
What inspired you to start a podcast?
DS: I always wanted a show like the Mac Power Users and since nobody else was doing it, I figured I'd just get it out of my system and do it myself. That was something like four years ago.
What do you do outside of hosting Mac Power Users?
DS: I write the MacSparky Field Guides, I publish MacSparky.com, and I practice law.
What are your interests outside of work and podcasting?
DS: I have way too many. Jazz music, reading, and general geek culture just to name a few. I also enjoy spending time with my family. I have one of those families where every single one of us is insane in our own special way but when we get together, we always have fun.
What projects are you working on?
DS: I'm always cooking up something.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
DS: Like everyone else, I'm looking forward to a little vacation time. Living in southern California, summers are also great for cutting out of work just a little early to fire up the Weber grill (charcoal baby!) and hang out with my family.
What are you reading this summer?
DS: I just finished Jo Walton's Among Others. I am looking forward to the next Temeraire novel, which is due soon, and thinking about Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings, which I'm told is good. I'm also currently reading Dave Taylor's Unix book.
What movies are you most looking forward to this summer?
DS: I got into an early screening of the new Star Trek movie (Rod Roddenberry is a nerd like us, and awesome). It was really great. My daughter and I just both re-read The Great Gatsby and we are going to see that one. I'm usually a sucker for every Pixar movie but not so sure about a sequel to Monsters, Inc. I'm also pretty sure I won't be able to miss The Lone Ranger. They had me with Johnny Depp as Tonto.
